Traditional and Seasonal Holidays
Traditions such as holidays, festivals, customs for weddings and funerals are similar to that of Mainland China. Most of them continue the teaching passed down from the Cing Dynasty. During major festivals and important holidays, activities such as rituals, dragon and lion dancing, local theater, Taiwanese opera as well as banquets and feasts are held.

tomb sweeing

Chinese new year's temple

Like other Hakka people in the Miaoli County, the tomb-sweeping day of Sanyi people is not on April 4. Instead, they choose to practice the traditions after the Lantern Festival, which is on the fifteen day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Actually, most of them go for tomb sweeping on the day after the Lantern Festival. There are many sayings on this particular habit. Some say that it is because in the old times, Hakka people were poor and mostly scattered around the area. Transportation was not convenient, too. Because most of them made their living in faraway areas, they chose to practice the tomb sweeping traditions earlier for their conveniences. Another saying emphasizes on the busy agricultural activities around the Tomb Sweeping Day in April, and Hakka people did it earlier to gain some more advantages for spring plowing. Some were said to re-use offerings in the Chinese New Year for tomb sweeping because of their poverty. In recent years, Hakka lives as well as transportation have been improved, and sixteenth day of the 1st lunar month might not coincide with a national holiday. Therefore, many families move their tomb sweeping activities to the first or second Sunday after the Lantern Festival, or even the Tomb Sweeping Day in April.

Some important holidays in Sanyi Township include Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, Mazu’s birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, birthday of Shennong God of Agriculture on 26th day of the forth lunar month, and the Ghost Festival on the fifteen day of the 7th lunar month. There are many customs to be followed during the Chinese New Year. For example, descendents have to worship their ancestors at the Chinese New Year’s Eve to thank their protection and blessings for the past year. In the early morning of the Chinese New Year’s Day, worship rituals is held again for ancestors and God of Heaven, to pray for the safety and peace of the coming year. At the same day, the front door of the house needs to be opened at a chosen auspicious hour. People then go visiting relatives and elders following an auspicious direction. Besides, it is prohibited to quarrel with others during the Chinese New Year. It is even a taboo to curse or say inauspicious words.

The festivities of the Lantern Festival coincide with the festival for Mazu’s birthday. (Even though Mazu’s birthday is on the 23rd day of the third lunar month, town people follow the tradition to hold the celebration on the 16th and 17th day of the first lunar month.) The festival continues for three days, and is the busiest holiday in Sanyi. Every family prepares offerings for ceremonies and hold banquet and feasts for guests. Dragon dance and tiger dance can be seen in every village. There are also local theater and fireworks in Shuangtan Village. The 26th day of the forth lunar month is the birthday of Shennong God of Agriculture. In front of the Wugu Temple of Guansheng Village, there are grand rituals and various activities. Crowds are everywhere on the street and every family feasts for celebration. Besides, Pudu rite to placate the wandering souls is held in front of the Wanshan Temple of Shuanghu Village at the Ghost Festival. It is a ritual to calm the wandering ghosts, pray for their reincarnation and rebirth, and plead for safety and peace of the public. Other temples such as Wangheng Temple, Sanhe Temple, Guanying Temple in Fenglong Mountain, also have their own dates for festivals and ceremonies. However, the celebrations of Mazu’s birthday in Tianhou Temple and the festival for Shennong’s birthday in Wugu Temple are still the most important and popular events in Sanyi Township.
