The Shengsing Train Station is situated at 164.6 km of the north-south bound cross-island railway, which begins at Keelung. It was built in April 1907 and was named Shihlioufen Signaling Station. It was renamed into train station in 1930. The old name “Shihlioufen” can still be seen at the slope close to the station. After the war, the area went under the jurisdiction of Shengsing Village, and was thus renamed again into Shengsing Train Station on 10 February 1958. At the beginning, it was only a signaling station for train traffic control, and only administration works for train crossing and transfer were carried out. Later, passenger trains and freight trains were operated in response to local needs. Freight transport was quite busy. Products from Dahu, such as coal, citronella oil, oranges, peaches and plums, were all exported from this station. In later years, freight was switched over to road transport along with the development of highway system. Freight trains were therefore stopped since 1983 and only passenger trains remained. At 9:10 p.m. on 23 September 1998, the services of the old Mountain Line Railway came to its end after the last south bound train No.167 stopped by. Now the busy traffic of this station can be only recalled in the memory.
The characteristics of Shengsing Train Station
1. It is the highest point of Taiwan Railway system, altitude 402.36 meters. There is also a monument “Highest Point of Taiwan Railway” that was erected in January 1959.
2. It was a busy junction on the old Mountain Line. The Shengsing Train Station is 5 km away from Sanyi Station and 8.6 km away from Taian Station. It thus became an important junction for up trains and down trains. Three trains busily queuing for their turn in this small station at the same time was quite a common view here. Such a busy view formed very interesting contrast with the quietness and peaceful environment outside the station.
3. The special design of the building according to Chinese feng-shui is also worthy of attention. It is said that due to the location of the station that is situated in Guangdao Mountain and surrounded by nine peaks, which each of them resemble the shape of a tiger head, special design such as trigram and lance shapes were placed at the station that sits in the “tiger’s nest”. Roof cresting was also made into incised decoration. It is said to protect the station from evil. Of course, this is only a legend. However, the feature of its architectural structure lies in the fact that no nails were used on the beam-to-column connection of this Japanese style wooden house. After 90 years, it is still well preserved. It thus becomes one of the most representative old train stations in Taiwan and is also the historic site with highest cultural values for preservation on the old Mountain Railway.
Nowadays, tourists that travel to Shengsing Train Station are bathed in nostalgia. No train arrives anymore. Instead, it becomes a popular place for wedding photography for its old-time atmosphere. It is also a newly discovered site for rally drivers. Tourists walk into the train tunnels for adventures. It was designated a county historic landmark on 16 April 1999 and the site of cultural and historical importance can be properly preserved.
