It is also called the Old Street. After exiting the freeway from the Sanyi Interchange, going north along the Provincial No.13 for about one kilometer to arrive this artistic district, where more than two hundred shops selling handcrafts and artistic works of wooden sculpture can be found. The area represents the wood sculpture industry in Sanyi. It is easily reachable and thus floods of tourists arrive. It is the major trade center for works of wood sculpture in Sanyi.
Wandering along the street, one can see choices of artworks to his surprise. No matter religious characters, depiction of landscape and scenery or lively animal, every piece is of its own characteristics.
To improve the management and quality of artworks in the area, the Sanyi township administration office has been pushing to complete projects for placing underground cables, renewal plan for advertisement signage, and pavement layering in the pedestrian area. All these help to present the town with a new look, to enhance the image of the commercial area and make it into a favorable destination for holidays, leisure, shopping and arts appreciation.
On the Old Street, there are also some “alternative” shops that offer traditional Hakka rice snacks, such as red bean sticky rice cake, Ai Cao sticky rice cake, muscovado sugar prosperity cake, mochi, or moon cake. There are also Hakka restaurants that serve authentic Hakka dishes such as tender boiled chicken served with soy sauce, Hakka style stir-fry, stir-fried (pig’s) intestines with finely shredded ginger, just to name a few.
