Huoyan Mountain

The Huoyan Mountain is 602 meter high, and is located at the border of Sanyi and Yuanli. Daan River flows by at the south. It is formed by soft foil, and due to weathering the rocky badland is exposed, presenting colors of auburn, yellow of orange. Under the sunset or at high noon, the mountain peaks resembles dancing fire and it is thus named after the scenery.

The precipitous mountain walls are not suitable for agricultural development. Therefore, it remains undeveloped and actually preserves quite a lot indigenous plant species. Chinese Red Pine and Oldham azalea are especially rich in number.

At the southwest corner of the Huoyan Mountain Terrace lies the most completely preserved Chinese Red Pine forest in Taiwan. Originally from south China, the Chinese Red Pine was widely distributed in the mountain area in Taiwan in the past. However, due to logging and deforestation, the habitat was mostly destroyed. The ecology of Chinese Red Pine and its companion plant species is worth studying for the benefits they can bring for windbreak along the seashore and forestation in the badland area.
